7 Ways to a Happy Child while you Garage Sale

  1. Make a decision to have a well rested child (if you have plenty to entertain them in the car) or a worn out child that will sleep through most of the car ride. You know what works for you and your child on this method.
  2. Comforts – bring a few things that comfort your child at home. Blankies, stuffed animal or for older kids – cell phone or electronic device is comforting. You know yourself what works wonders – if it fits in the car – TAKE IT! for some, the sun is too much to bare - screen on the window or sunglasses if old enough. Sunblock to prevent sunburns while walking around.
  3. Snacks and Drinks – Get those bottles, tippy cups, water bottles and pop bottles in a nice little cooler and ready to grab as soon as your child needs one. Snacks that are easy and not too messy – if you have a food tray for the car – helps reduce the mess scattering. Crackers, little sandwiches, trail bars or cereal bars.
  4. Help them stay Clean – take wet wipes or wet wash cloth in zip lock baggie. Take a tray for food and/or drawing on later. Reuse your plastic shopping bag as a trash holder for the car. Keep it close to your child.
  5. Play – In between sales, your child may want to color, play a game, play with toys or something fun for them. You don’t have to take a whole box of crayons, just take a few or use the Markers that don’t allow mess anywhere else but on the paper that comes with it. Hot wheels are a great toy for boys and some girls too. Dolls that they can do something things with. Look at travel games in the book stores and see if one suites your child. Take a few books. Their favorite music in the car is nice too. Some have TV in the car, take their favorite movie videos to run while you travel.
  6. Communicate and Involve Them – its easy for us to get caught up with a friend in conversation or looking at the stuff and forget to talk and give that needed attention to a child. Involve them as much as you can so they don’t wine because they feel ignored. Give them a little money so they have some buying power too.
  7. Rules – Give them the rules prior to going. Cover no fits or tantrums. We can have everything we see. The things you will see belong to the people unless we buy it. Stay close to mom or dad and look both ways before we cross any streets, hold hands. Let mom know when a restroom break is needed. Be nice to people and don’t put your mouth on any toys – icky!

10 Ways to go shopping at yard sales PREPARED

  1. The comforts: shoes, your own water or soda, a map of where you are going. Today that means GPS, map on an android phone or print outs from mapquest or google maps. Things that will keep you comfortable in the car for a full day, pillows, etc.
  2. The Food and Drinks: Take a small cooler with an ice pack and add your own drinks and a sandwich or a few snacks. Great way to save yourself some money stopping at a gas station or fast food joint.
  3. The Cash: Have cash in hand, lots of ones, fives and tens and change is good too - lots of quarter items for sale. It gives more room for negotiating that lower price. The ATM and its twenties are not your garage sale friends!
  4. The Storage: Make sure your backseat and trunk are open for adding new finds. Take some plastic bags, fabric bags and maybe a box. It's nice to have your own to carry more then one item and to keep it all together.
  5. A List: What you are looking for, brands, clothes and shoe sizes for whomever you are shopping for.
  6. THE Map or MAP Ap: Add the addresses into your GPS system or use a phone ap to see the pin pointed areas of sales and create that route of where you are going first second and third.
  7. The Time: Write down the start and end times for each of the sales you plan to go to. That is mainly useful to figure out where to go first and last. Anything in between is not really an issue.
  8. Extras: If you use a wheel chair or walker or have oxygen, make sure you have those items and extra bottles of air to last for the time you plan to shop around. If a sale ad has a contact phone number or email, ask them if you would have access with any assisted items you use to get yourself around. Take sunglasses, sunblock and a hat.
  9. The entertainment: Well if you have a friend with you, no need for filling drive time since talking to each other will do wonderfully. Discs for playing your favorite songs. Kids toys, drawing items or electronic toys to keep them occupied between sales.
  10. Know your Prices: The object of Negotiations is to come prepared so you know what to offer and get the deal you want. If you searched a bit ahead of time, you will know prices of new items, used items, what it shows up on eBay or what a friend paid for a used item.
